If you happen to be traveling to France in July and January, be sure to take advantage of Les Soldes.

Les Soldes (the sales) are country-wide in France and happen exclusively in the two months of July and January. Why are they so special you may be wondering?

The French government allows the shops “to sell at a loss, in order to sell their stock, and that is why you get such incredible values. This semi-annual sale is highly regulated, meaning, shops cannot first raise their prices to reduce them. The original price must be clearly shown along with the discounted price.

Prior to 2020, brands and businesses held their les soldes for six weeks, but now they can choose which weeks during this window they will have their sale, so check your favorite brands to find out when they will be discounting as it is no longer the entire month of July or January, but sometimes it is and even lasts into February or begins in June.

What is included in the sales are collections from previous seasons that have not yet sold, so you aren’t going to find, for example, pre-fall collections on sale during July, but you will find spring and summer collections.

With the goal of shops to empty their stock to make room for the upcoming new seasons, it is no wonderful shoppers – French and travelers alike – schedule trips and make time to shop, as well as wait to purchase high priced designer items, during this window twice a year.

I have had the opportunity to be in France during Les Soldes a couple of times and have found some wonderful deals on designer clothing, but also home décor items as again, the sales are France-wide. Both in Paris and in the countryside (I happened to be in Provence one July), shops hold their les soles, and beautiful wares are drastically reduced. In many ways, France is on sale, but make sure you purchase what you really want.

Today, to give you a taste, I have shopped a handful of French brands in lingerie, cashmere and everyday items. Simply click the link below the image to take you to the site to shop. The discount is clearly marked on each item. Wishing you a discounted shopping excursion to add a few items to your capsule wardrobe.

  1. Wouldn’t it be great if we had a similar system? Retailers here often inflate prices prior to a “sale” and I think many people are starting to recognize this tactic. I know of a shop that actually puts two price tags on each item when stocking, the inflated cost and then the reduced price tag. I have witnessed it and know someone who worked there. I find it so unsettling and have stopped shopping there. You are lucky to have been there during this event but as you mentioned, buy only what you need because those reduced prices can be very enticing! Have a lovely day with sweet Norman.
