During my tenure as a teacher, every day brought a wide array of emotions into my classroom as carried by the students. For example, during the first week of school, when the new seniors began their final year, great enthusiasm and glee were observed, while at the same time, trepidation and uncertainty were felt by Freshmen or new students. Any seasoned teacher knew their job on the first day (but on all days as well) was to provide ease, stability, clarity, and a place of welcome for every student, no matter how different one class or one student’s energy was from the next. To observe, to notice, and to respond as needed – not assuming, not expecting, and not treating every student the same – yes, all with respect while doing so with integrity to honor their job as a teacher offering the education for the student and a place to foster learning for each.

When it comes to our mind, and being a student of mind, when we know and live a life of contentment, we know that whether our mind is busy or quiet, we can be at ease with what is. What we call equanimity (explore episode #428 to learn more about this skill). Contentment involves the skill of awareness, the clarity of seeing, and the knowing that whatever arises, we will be able to respond constructively.

Contentment brings an ease that resides deep within us and cannot be disturbed by outside events because it’s not dependent on outside events.

Contentment allows us to sit and observe from a place of non-judgment, free of bias, and that is where clarity is found, so that we can be at peace with the decision we make regarding how we will respond.

Let’s begin . . .

~To conclude each meditation session, I encourage you to recite a mantra of your choosing and design. In the Contentment Masterclass, I share my example, which you are welcome to use, tweak, or look to as a template to design your own. Also provided to enrollees of the course is a free trial of the guided meditation app I use.
