The autumn rains have begun, and the temperatures are just ideal – not too hot nor too cold – and that means it is Trench Coat season! Each fashion year there are seasonal reiterations of this timeless classic, and while it is fun to peruse what designers have come up with – what is the new color or cut, when we find the style, length, and shade of khaki/beige or not sticking with this neutral hue at all, that works best for our height, skin tone and hair color, it is a coat we will wear for dare I say decades. I know I have.
I have shared far too often, so if you would indulge me one more time, that the trench I purchased in 2017 from Burberry is still going strong and I wouldn’t want anything else for this trusted staple in my closet that I have worn repeatedly during each fall and spring for both everyday errands and traveling abroad. The quintessential example of a ‘hero’ piece.
So when British Vogue shared a recent post full of “fresh ways” to wear a trench coat which followed receiving a comment from a TSLL member sharing she currently was on the hunt for this timeless staple, (thank you for reaching out Logan!), I have been seeing trench coats pop up everywhere. And that brings me to today’s post! Today I have pulled together a post full of trenches (more than 30+ with various color options) that are currently available and in multiple sizes, lengths and fabrics (the classic cotton or twill as well as wool).
Grouping them into various categories beginning with price points, you will see below an Investment category (luxury – $1000+), a mid-luxury category ($350-$999), and a Budget category ($80-349). As well, I have shopped a handful of short trenches, a style and length of coat I also have found to be regularly worn in my own everyday routine, and all of the short trenches shown have different price points, so be sure to click through if a style speaks to you to see if the price will work (a few of the mid and luxury coats are on sale).
Let’s get started, shall we? And if you are in the market for adding this capsule wardrobe piece to your closet, I do hope this post introducing you to brands and styles to keep on your radar as I have shopping nearly every brand I could think of that dependably offers trenches each season both from here in the states and in England, as well as one or two from France. Here we go! (oh, and don’t forget the umbrella!, but a few of the trenches – two – have detachable hoods).

The Perfect Trench is Personal (the story of finding my Burberry Trench in London)
I don’t NEED a new trench, but it is always fun to look! Love the sleek slim style of the Ralph Lauren and the drape and style of the Hobbs Rhian–that olive color is so yummy. I’m committed to upping my thrift game, so will definitely be checking in on Net-A-Porter throughout the season. Thanks for the inspiration, Shannon!
Thank you for stoping by Rona and isn’t the Rhian in olive gorgeous. I am drawn to it as well. Enjoy the treasure hunting of thrifting! Such a good (and fun) idea!
I was trying to post this as a new comment rather than a reply, but here goes: I own the Jenni Kayne trench in Carbon, a previous season colorway that is dark green/grey. It is striking and water resistant, and the shade suits my coloring much better than the many tan and khaki coats I tried in my journey. When you shop for a trench, see if it’s machine washable. If so, you may be able to use a wash-in waterproofing product such as NikWax to make it an all-weather BFF.
Thanks for the tip, Laurene, being at least water-resistant is on my checklist when shopping for a trench! The Carbon colorway sounds gorgeous.
Thank you for sharing this helpful information and good to hear about it being striking! I do like the cut from the photos. 🙂
A great selection of raincoats the month for raincoats. I think sales of raincoats went up this month. My trusted’mac’intosh over 50 years old! is fraying now. Had it repaired a few times. The first water repellant raincoat to be designed by a chemist. Aquascutum is another British label a bit older than Burberry but I think that only the men’s range is available now. Vestiare collective has pre-loved women’s coats on sale.
Another great French label for a solid trench is APC . Love their no nonsense styling. Comptoir
de Cotonnier has trench coats at a good price point.
Stay dry everyone.

Thank you for sharing how long your Mac has lasted. They are worth the investment as you have demonstrated as they are made well and thank you as well for sharing a bit of the backstory to the brand! Consignment is a great idea and Vestiare a wonderful online place to shop – thank you for that reminder. 🙂 Wishing you a cozy rainy fall! 🙂
I own and love the Sezane Scott Trench in Camel. The Burberry is the dream but it will stand me in good stead for now – great quality.
I also have my eye on the Clyde Trench from Sezane,
Sarah
Thank you for sharing your experience with this particular coat. That speaks highly of the brand as your taste is keen. 🙂
