To be in this moment, fully aware. To notice what our senses observe – the whistle of the breeze, the tapping of the rain, the scent of fresh air, the sight of the sunrise. That is all we are trying to learn when we make time to meditate: to be present, to hold our mind open, and to start from a place of engaging with a kind heart.

There are many ways to meditate, and however we choose to do so, so long as these three intentions are what guide us, what inspire us to sit down, or take a walk, or lay flat on our back, however we most feel comfortable meditating, paying attention to our breath as we thoughtfully inhale and exhale, that is all that we need to do. Just breathe, just be present, observing what is around us, not asking for it to be anything or do anything, just seeing.

For whatever reason that we have been drawn to meditation, when we choose to meditate, what we gain is understanding, compassion, awareness, and indirectly, these each bring more peace, more calm and ease. Even if our direct motivation is to be calm, the reality is that it is a byproduct of the skills we are learning – the ability to be fully present, to hold our heart open free of judgment and to engage with a kind heart. Meditation gives us the ability to pause after seeing, to catch ourselves if we would have in the past reacted and passed judgment, or projected past experience onto a new one, and instead become aware of our emotions and our thoughts so that we can give ourselves a choice of how we want to respond that would best serve the ethos we live by – with loving-kindness and integrity.

Let’s begin . . .

~To conclude each meditation session, I encourage you to recite a mantra of your choosing and design. In the Contentment Masterclass, I share my example, which you are welcome to use, tweak, or look to as a template to design your own. Also provided to enrollees of the course is a free trial of the guided meditation app I use.
