It is often presented to us that the more we have in our control, the more peace we will have. If we accept this purported truth, we cause our life experience – in relationships, opportunities, and true peace felt – to shrink.
Meditation reveals that we cannot control the thoughts that arise, but we can control which we embrace, focus on and feed. The same holds true for life. We cannot control others, we cannot control the news, we cannot control the weather, and so many other things, all outside of ourselves, but we can control which we choose to nourish.
During our meditation sessions, we are practicing how to step back from harmful or unproductive thoughts, and it is when we learn this skill, and know that we know how to recognize what will be harmful or unproductive, THAT is when we experience true peace.
Similar to knowing how to respond when we are driving on ice and start to slide. If we know how to turn into the slide rather than against it to safely come out of it and avoid colliding with an object, we are more at ease while driving in icy conditions when we know they are traversible with the right skills. And in the case of living well, that skill is ours to learn, how to maintain a sense of peace no matter what the day presents.
Let’s begin our practice session to instill the skill that will lead us to peace . . .
