Whether you choose to spell the leisurely and luxurious robe or tunic with a ‘K’ or ‘C’, the caftan is forever as Nancy MacDonnell wrote in the Wall Street Journal last week. While originally a clothing worn during battle, the caftan has become an everyday summer or resort capsule wardrobe item not to be forgotten.

Worn as an elegant gown in the evening, a chic swimsuit cover-up during the day or an everyday effortless choice at all times, when you find one you love, you will have it on hand for years. In other words, don’t be afraid of investing in sumptuous fabrics as such a piece lays upon your skin caressing you as you move, and simply put, natural fabrics, breathable fabrics are most comfortable.

Today I have styled one outfit complete with sunscreen and reading material, but also shopping more than a handful of kaftans available in various price points. Happy shopping and wishing you a comfortable and stylish summer.

  1. Gosh, so many lovely ones…….I surprised myself by really liking the animal print one , but the pure white one and the DVF willow pattern and primrose and white pattern ones are more ‘me ‘
My swimsuit coverup is actually a oversized sheer white lawn shirt , with the option to roll up the sleeves and button them into place.
I’ve had it for years , and it works really well for me.
The kaftans you selected were fun to look at Shannon, thank you ?

  2. Kaftans bring back childhood memories for me. It was an elegant time in the 1950s when our mothers lounged around the pool in their cover-ups! My mother had seen a photoshoot of Elizabeth Taylor in a green Kaftan in Life magazine and that was it! The hair was never wet, rarely did any of the moms come in our pool but the kids had a great time. Thanks for the flashback. I don’t have one, I may have to rethink that one.

  3. All so beautiful. Having worn them since the seventies they are a must have for summer. Great for ‘wafting’ around the house but also perfect to dress up with some accessories.
