A ‘like’, a glowing review, praise from our cheering box. Or on the other hand a criticism, a negative comment or what feels like a personal attack or dismissal. The former list seems to be what we desire and the latter what we do our best to avoid, but what if, we let go of our dependence on the first and fear of the second? We will then find peace.
When we have grounded our daily life, our mindset, and how we engage with the world, in contentment, that settled feeling reflects that we have awareness of the humanity around us and that they will react or respond in ways that are often unrelated to us, even if we trigger or excite something within them. This knowing sets us free to no longer rely on their approval or fear their disapproval.
Rather than being apathetic, we care deeply about those around us because we have compassion for others and ourselves. We want them to know peace too, but when we rely on their praise and our mood depends on not receiving unwanted responses, then we are like a fragile, delicate flower that needs perfect conditions at all times to thrive. And this is impossible. Life will throw at us storms, freezing temperatures, and blazing heat. How we steady our mind is in knowing that we are grounded. That we know ourselves, know that we engage in doing our best in that moment, apply the skills of loving-kindness, and in the areas we are dedicated to mastering in all sorts of fields, but also knowing that change, evolution, and shifts are part of life.
We can remain at peace, maintain a sense of ease each day by knowing that the weather will always change – our life and choices will fluctuate depending on things beyond our control, but we know how to steady ourselves because we know our strengths, know our intentions, and seek only to give what we can uniquely give by being our true selves. That is what energizes us and gives us strength.

~To conclude each meditation session, I encourage you to recite a mantra of your choosing and design. In the Contentment Masterclass, I share my example, which you are welcome to use, tweak, or look to as a template to design your own. Also provided to enrollees of the course is a free trial of the guided meditation app I use.
