Sitting down to meditate. It may appear to be a luxury to have five or ten minutes to ourselves each day, to practice observing our thoughts, but only is it a luxury if we think peace isn’t fundamental to a civilized world.

To find peace within our own mind strengthens the likelihood that we will engage peacefully, without reacting, without malice, without harm, to all other sentient beings. As we grow stronger in our meditation practice of witnessing unwanted thoughts which helps to prevent rash decisions and actions, we also begin to understand that we are not alone in navigating such feelings. What is happening is that our compassion is deepening.

Our situations may appear different from others, and indeed absolutely will be unique to our life journey, but feeling fear, feeling pain, feeling grief, these are all emotions we each experience, even if we engage with them in a different way.

When we strengthen our compassion, we see the humanity in others and in all sentient beings, and are motivated to no longer cause them pain that we have the ability to prevent.

We meditate not only for our own well-being, but for the well-being of others as well. So the next time you question whether or not meditating is beneficial, even if you can’t yet see how it is strengthening the peace in your own life, keep in mind that you are doing so for every single living being you see, cross paths with and interact with in your life.

Let’s begin . . .

~To conclude each meditation session, I encourage you to recite a mantra of your choosing and design. In the Contentment Masterclass, I share my example, which you are welcome to use, tweak, or look to as a template to design your own. Also provided to enrollees of the course is a free trial of the guided meditation app I use.
