“There is a conception in this country about luxurious things that we have to save them for a time that’s right. But an object is truly luxurious if you allow it to be, if you use it. When you live with beautiful things you stimulate your mind, you enjoy life a little bit more.”

—Fashion designer Ralph Rucci, September 05 Elle Decor

This week bring out the china for a simple dinner for two, drink that delicious bottle of Pepperbridge’s Reserve wine with pizza and your significant other, buy flowers because it’s Tuesday, and don’t feel guilty.  Life is about enjoying the now, not only dreaming about what will be.  After all, luxury is elegance, and true elegance is refusal, so refuse to let the gorgeous collection of napkins, tea cups, dishes, whatever it may be, go unused.

What are some daily luxuries you allow yourself?  I’ll get the conversation started.  Well, I have typically one glass of wine from one of the many local wineries in nearby Walla Walla each week, not feeling bad about having to put most of it back in the fridge. Flowers are bought when I see a beautiful bouquet while I’m at the grocery store or farmer’s market.  Quality ingredients for recipes are purchased even if it is just for a middle of the week day dinner.  Oh goodness, I should stop there.  I can’t wait to hear from you.  Have a wonderful week!

  1. I can’t quite bring myself to buy flowers regularly (sad, coz nobody else is about to buy them for me!) but just last week I brought out some wedding-gift crystal tumblers that we’d never even touched. I don’t want to die with unused wedding presents in the house, that’s just silly. I figure, either they’ll come through the dishwasher safely, or they won’t. My kitchen is pretty Darwinian in that way!

  2. hmm.. I think my favorite little luxuries are foreign shelter magazines, fresh flowers, candles, bobbi brown lipstick.. I could go on and on. I’m all about daily little luxuries!

  3. You will probably not believe it, but one luxury I buy myself from time to time is: Brie cheese. I know sounds crazy, but here in Brazil this kind of cheese is over expensive. In Germany I almost it the cheese daily, here I indulge in Brie once or twice per month.

  4. Sandra – I had no idea it was so expensive in Brazil. But I must absolutely agree that brie itself is a luxury. Whenever I indulge in it, I refuse to think about all the calories. It’s too delicious!
