Classic effortless style, patterned after the French women who blazed the trail and demonstrate that simple is sophisticated, more often than not entails a classic trench coat. And as I mentioned in this podcast episode when discussing the style tips of the French woman, as much as I want to purchase a Burberry trench, my budget has told me to wait. However, there are many quality mid-range designs that embody that classic silhouette and structure, and one worth checking out is London Fog.
Currently I have had in my closet for over five years and worn regularly J.Crew’s Icon trench (currently 30% off with promo code BIGSALE) which is mid-thigh length – perfect to wear over jeans but not ideally worn over a dress or a skirt as the coat’s length is far shorter. And so, I have been on the lookout for a trench that hit at or preferably just barely below the knee. Why? I need a versatile trench that can be worn with jeans but also with any of my pencil skirt ensembles or dresses. And as luck would have it, I came across London Fog’s Gillian long-trench in stone or black.
I was over the moon, and even more so when I paid less than $140. If you too are in the market for a classic trench, stop by Macy’s (save 30% with FRIEND promo code) or the London Fog website and discover a label that offers classic quality styles at affordable prices.
As it is a classic item for a capsule wardrobe, this coat can be found in TSLL’s Capsule Wardrobe Boutique in All-Season. Just in case you aren’t ready to buy right now, rest-assured, you will know where to find it when you are.
Just a kind FYI, the J.Crew trench is excluded from the discount promo code. Drats!
Oh shoot! The be sure to use ebates and the Honey bookmarklet to save some money.
I wholeheartedly echo this recommendation! I bought this trench in February from Nordstrom, after searching for over a year for the perfect combination of color (I got it in stone), weight, style, and price. I think I paid full price for it, but even at $160, it’s worth it for a classic coat from such a reputable brand. I wear it all the time (even in Texas!) and I couldn’t be happier with it. I didn’t even know it had the gorgeous pale blue lining until it was delivered – that was just a lovely little bonus.
Marcia, thank you for sharing your experience and full and wholehearted recommendation. 🙂
I could use a London Fog style trench, but no money for it just now. I must pay loans down. Other wise a good post and thank you for sharing.
Ive got a short traditional khaki and a long black trench…timeless. Worth investing in. Same idea as our furniture…buy one good piece a year and in 10 you will have core pieces that will be with you the rest of your days.-Laurel Bledsoe
I just bought this at Macy’s and picked it up this week! (I pre-saled it!) This was such a great find. I had been looking for an update to an old trench that was just not cutting it anymore and fell in love with London Fog’s classic look. Great pick!

Thank you for this! I just bought it in black on Macys.com. Can’t wait for it to arrive next week!
You are welcome! Enjoy!
I bought it in black, too. I have received it and I am so pleased. Thank you for the recommendation! I have been looking for a good replacement for an old one. This is perfect for me.
So happy to hear! Thank you for sharing. 🙂
