As we step into the second month of the calendar year, many of us may have set intentions or resolutions, ways in which we would like to grow, evolve, or change. Sometimes when we set our sights on an outcome that is not yet part of our lives, we tell ourselves an unhelpful story —I will be at peace when I achieve/complete/reach [whatever the aspiration was] or I will be happy when [insert the lifestyle change we have envisioned]. When we tell ourselves these stories, we are neglecting to understand how to be happy in the present moment. And the present moment is all we will ever have. Even when that future moment arrives, it will be the present moment, not the future. We will never be ‘in the future’.

This is not to say that we can’t grow or change, but we must be conscious of our mindset and where we hold our attention as we live our lives. We set the intention of what we would like to bring into our life or how we would like to evolve, point ourselves in the most beneficial direction to arrive at said point at some point in the future (with our schedule, habits, etc.), then we let go and live in the now. That is where the bliss of life can only be experienced.

Being able to bring our mind back to the present moment is what we practice doing when we sit and meditate. We practice noticing a thought, acknowledging it, but then bringing our mind back to the breath. When we have the skill of being able to do this with our breath, this eventually translates into our everyday life so that we can have a dream for the future, but consciously bring ourselves back to the present moment and live it fully.

Let’s begin.

~To conclude each meditation session, I encourage you to recite a mantra of your choosing and design. In the Contentment Masterclass, I share my example, which you are welcome to use, tweak, or look to as a template to design your own. Also provided to enrollees of the course is a free trial of the guided meditation app I use.
