To take a walk underneath a canopy of trees, trees all of the same varietal, when we look at each individually, we discover how unique in shape and structure they are. Yet, still, they are all, for example, pine trees. In my own garden, I have multiple trees of the same species, and each has different curves and variations in branches at different angles, yet they are all the same species. I appreciate them all. Similarly, as humans, there are literally billions of us, and each of us has unique gifts, beauty, and characteristics. When we apply the skill of awareness to fully see either each tree individually or ourselves, we set aside comparison and instead recognize the uniqueness each has.

To compare ourselves, our lives, our skills, and experiences to anyone else’s is to reject ourselves, and in so doing, we dismiss what is always within us, waiting for us to acknowledge – our gifts, our uniqueness. Interestingly enough, we also are rejecting the other person because we are only seeing what we are capable of seeing and not the entire person, their journey, their entire toolbox of gifts. Instead, simply observe and set aside any judgment because judgment involves comparison. Observation is an act of mindfulness demonstrating that we understand there is much that cannot be known, and also to know we too are unique. This awareness brings us back to peace and deepens our appreciation. All by being aware, a skill of mindfulness.

Let’s begin.

~To conclude each meditation session, I encourage you to recite a mantra of your choosing and design. In the Contentment Masterclass, I share my example, which you are welcome to use, tweak, or look to as a template to design your own. Also provided to enrollees of the course is a free trial of the guided meditation app I use.
