Each time I sit down in a tidied home, or after I have spruced up a border in the garden, an immediate wave of calm and then clarity about anything that I have been stumped by arrives without any instigation or encouragement on my part. By tending to something that indirectly distracted my mind and attention, cleaning the house or weeding or pruning in the garden so that the plants would shine fully, I free it from confusion and frustration.

Each one of us has an inner compass, whatever you refer to it as, that sings our unique individual song – what brings us each to life without any effort, that energizes us when we are aligned. But when our mind is distracted by busyness and mental chatter, it resembles an out-of-tune radio station – full of static, hard to make sense of the message or directions, and thus, clarity cannot be located.

Whenever we are trying to make a decision that is significant for our life, we may sit down and create a pros & cons list or gather opinions from others, asking them for advice on what we should do. But let me suggest that you already have the answer of what your next step is within you. All you, all that any of us, needs to do is quiet the mind, and yep, step back from our thoughts. When we make space for ideas to present themselves, then they will in their own time, but they can’t force their way to our attention if we have cluttered the mind with all of the other busyness and information from others that we are hearing.

Make space, that is what meditation helps us do. Meditation doesn’t give us answers. It simply creates the open space for the most sincere and worthwhile ideas to come forth. A calm mind is calm because it trusts its inner compass, and knows that when we tune in to it, it will wisely guide us. When we know how to trust ourselves, then we can calmly and with confidence understand what the next step, what the decision needs to be for us to be at peace and come to life.

Let’s begin . . .

~To conclude each meditation session, I encourage you to recite a mantra of your choosing and design. In the Contentment Masterclass, I share my example, which you are welcome to use, tweak, or look to as a template to design your own. Also provided to enrollees of the course is a free trial of the guided meditation app I use.
