What a list this week! More than 20 finds, many of them including Black Friday discounts, books about food, decor, bookshops, birding, Paris and more. Films aplenty and one that is only going into theaters through November 29th, so watch it now to see it on the big screen. And the clothing finds – oh my – I have found luxurious sweaters, knit dresses, suede boots and flats, all on sale, even a fantastically classic quilted Barbour coat (on sale too!) And I haven’t forgotten our four-legged companions – a German brand that is a must-explore (and finds are on sale there as well). But still, there is more. Oh, a vintage French cassoulet dish – there’s only four left, and it’s on sale. On top of ALL of that, I have a long list of Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales not to miss and a few thoughts on how to approach this weekend of shopping thoughtfully. I do hope you enjoy and thank you for stopping by today.

Books

—In Praise of Difficult Women: Life Lessons from 29 Heroines Who Dared to Break the Rules by Karen Karbo

In 2013, American writer living in the south of France, Karen Carbo wrote a book about Julia Child – Julia Child Rules: Lessons on Savoring Life – and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Her most recent book, released in 2018, is her piece de resistance – In Praise of Difficult Women. “From Frida Kahlo and Elizabeth Taylor to Nora Ephron, Carrie Fisher, and Lena Dunham, this witty narrative explores what we can learn from the imperfect and extraordinary legacies of 29 iconic women who forged their own unique paths in the world.”

Objects of Desire by Maria Hummer-Tuttle

If you too value the power of treasure hunting and how such details uplift the sanctuary you call home, you will thoroughly enjoy Objects of Desire. “For Maria Hummer-Tuttle, the objects she has collected over the years, from the priceless to the flea-market finds, are precious not only for their beauty, uniqueness, and craftsmanship but also for their connection to the past and the future, for their resonance with one another.”

The Last Days of Terranova: A Novel by Manuel Rivas

Translated for English readers to enjoy and praised by book critics, The Last Days of Terranova was released on November 15th and tells the story of “Vicenzo Fontana, the elderly owner of the long-standing Terranova Bookstore, on the day it’s set to close due to the greed of real-estate speculators. On this final day, Vincenzo spends the night in his beloved store filled with more than seventy years of fugitive histories.”

Omelette: Food, Love, Chaos and Other Conversations by Jessie Ware

Included in the UK’s The Telegraph’s Sunday Telegraph‘s “Five Best Books for Foodies” this Christmas. Author Jessie Ware describes the book by saying, “Collected here are things I’ve done, things I’ve seen, things I’ve thought, and most importantly, things I’ve tasted. They’re slices of parts of my life. Call them omelettes, if you like. I hope you enjoy them.”

Slow Birding: The Art and Science of Enjoying the Birds in Your Own Backyard by Joan E. Strassmann

If you like me love your bird cafés and find yourself becoming more and more fascinated by them, this is the book for you, or that person who is like this on your holiday gift list. “In Slow Birding, evolutionary biologist Joan E. Strassmann introduces readers to the joys of birding right where they are. In this inspiring guide to the art of slow birding, Strassmann tells colorful stories of the most common birds to be found in the United States—birds we often see but might not have considered deeply before.”

British Find

Great British Baking Off, Holidays 2022

Last weekend I devoured the two episodes in this year’s Holiday Edition, and thoroughly enjoyed them. In fact, I may watch them again. One to celebrate Christmas and the second to celebrate the start of the new year. Find both episodes on Netflix.

Matilda Goad & Co Toast Rack, green

I discovered this traditional-made-modern toast rack in the recent issue of The English Home, and while it would be perfect for breakfast tableware, I could see this used in a variety of other creative ways as well.

Films

The Fabelmans

Academy Award winning director Steven Spielberg has made a film based on his childhood and it’s called The Fabelmans. Critics are quite excited and it is released to the public today. Have a look at the trailer below.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (one week only in theaters)

For one short week, you can watch the sequel to the wildly popular Knives Out film in theaters beginning today through November 29th. After the 29th, it will then, in a couple week’s time, become available to stream on Netflix. Having seen the trailer a few months ago, I have been excited to see this one which is altogether different (cast included, except Daniel Craig remains) and the only thing that is similar is a mystery to solve that is full of red herrings. Have a look at what you can expect, or at least look forward to.

Lady Chatterly’s Lover

Oh my goodness. So the actor who played the young Diana in season 4 of The Crown, Emma Corrin now stars in Lady Chatterly’s Lover. Premiering first in the UK on November 25th, and then coming to Netflix on the 2nd, take a look at the steamy film adaptation of the classic novel by English writer D.H. Lawrence where it was originally published privately in Italy in 1928 and then in France in 1929. Jack O’Connell is the gamekeeper on the Chatterly’s estate that draws Lady Chatterly’s attention.

Francophile Find

Makers Paris by Carrie Solomon and Kate van den Boogert

Released a couple of years ago, a resource for Francophiles who love to visit Paris. Makers Paris “introduces you to the locals behind thirty-five of Paris’s unique shops, studios, and more. Through beautifully illustrated spreads, immerse yourself in the daily practices of diverse creatives including fashion designer Isabel Marant; baker Apollonia Poilâne, whose sourdough loaves are the toast of the city; fourth-generation art supplier Sophie Sennelier; Palais-Royal shoe designer Pierre Hardy; jet-setting street artist and hotelier André Saraiva; bookseller Sylvia Whitman who continues her father’s literary heritage with flair; French cocktail expert Franck Audoux” and so many more.

Holidays

Liberty London Eustacia Wicker Hamper, 30% off

The favorite and iconic British company Liberty of London is worth checking out at any time of the year, but right now, they are having a Black Friday sale not to miss. This hamper, while a special gift for someone or someones on your list, will definitely be a hit if received.

Liberty Barbour Quilted Jacket, 30% off

Another iconic British brand – Barbour, and this traditional olive quilted jacket is on sale. Just imagine yourself strolling on the rolling hills of England whilst wearing this coat this late fall and into the winter. Don’t forget to add the wellies!

Old World Christmas ornaments

Each year I add one new ornament to my treat that speaks to something that I savored or appreciated that year, and this year, I found these old world ornaments with oodles of options in a variety of themes. Well-priced, perhaps you are looking for a unique, classic ornament as well.

William Walker, dog accessories, Dog Collar Ocean, 20% off

My French Country Home magazine introduced me to William Walker which sells all sorts of accessories for our four-legged companions – leashes, collars, toys, beds, coats and even food. This leather collar comes in many colors, sizes, and finishes and is very reasonably priced, and now on sale.

Reiss Brown Penny Stripe Shirt Dress, 15% off

Reiss is having a sale as well, and this classic strip in Brown Penny with the pussy bow detailing would be a subtle stunner at the upcoming holiday soiree. Comfortable and stylish.

Yet another sale of note. If you are in the market for a classic knee-high boot, these boots are not fussy, and available in traditional styling.

Staud Carnation Balloon Sleeve Midi Dress, Camel

Staud has many finds I wanted to share, but I will restrain myself to two this week. Save 50% off for size medium only now at Neiman Marcus.

A quick note about the Black Friday, “Thanksgiving”, Cyber Monday, essential, the extended Thanksgiving/Holiday Sales: there is a significant glut of product in most shops’ warehouses. If you know what you want, these prices are worth pouncing on. They aren’t AMAZING prices with the cost of inflation that drove up the prices before they dropped, but they are significantly impressive and likely not to be seen again once the new year begins. However, as we all know, if we wouldn’t buy it at full price, we definitely shouldn’t be purchasing it on sale.

Regarding the list of sales shared above: this is just a smidge of the sales out there, so if you know your brand, visit the site, search the item, and it will likely be on sale. I could have sat at my computer all day gathering up the sales, but essentially, the internet is on sale today and through either the 29th or the 27th.

Something I did last week and have been doing steadily over time is saving clothing, decor and cooking items with KarmaNow‘s plug-in and this weekend I am checking my ‘library’ of saves to see what is on sale as I don’t always remember what I saved say for example this past summer. With that said, I have been able to save significantly, so have fun exploring the sales and definitely celebrate the savings whilst patting yourself on the back for having the patience to wait.

As I shared yesterday in the annual Thanksgiving post, the pups and I savored the day. After wrapping up this post, I stepped into the kitchen for the rest of the afternoon, and dined into the evening, nibbling, sipping, snuggling and then finally reading a book I began reading two nights ago and cannot seem to stop unless my eyelids collapse shut.

Below I have gathered up a few links, but kept it short as there are sooooo many links above to explore that I have a feeling you will be kept more than busy perusing. Be sure to return to TSLL’s holiday gift guide to see if any of those items are now on sale.

~Explore last week’s This & That: November 18, 2022

Sooo many books this week! Ten to be exact and each from a different genre of interest – food, history, Marie Kondo (is that a genre? either way, she has a new book that looks worth exploring), grammar, mystery, entertaining in style and much more. Also, if you are looking for a chic, classic velvet slipper or loafer, for men or women, I have found them. Shoes and sales, and She Said, the new film starring Carey Mulligan. Yep, and still there is more! Including a holiday find that will add a touch of jingle to your garland. ?

  1. Hi, I too have listened to the audio book! What a joy, so well crafted and enthralling! Magpie Murders was equally fabulous!

  2. Hi Shannon – thank you again for compiling this always!

I look forward to This & That every week.

An extra-special thank you for the information regarding Glass Onion. I quickly purchased my tickets – I did not realize it was only one week in theaters. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing it!

    Wishing you a restful weekend,
    Sara

    1. Sara,

Have fun at the movies! I am debating whether I am going to watch it as well, as watching a film, such as this one, in the actual theater is a treat. 🙂 Enjoy and thank you for stopping by!

  3. Love at first sight ❤️?

Thank you for sharing this gentle and thought provoking little film Shannon , I really enjoyed it .

Did you know that Phyllida Law is Emma Thompson’s mother ?

I hope that you and the pups are having a lovely Thanksgiving weekend.

  4. I’ve just caught up, and oh I have to say I think Jack O’Connell is a great casting for Lady Chatterley’s gamekeeper lover. I’ve enjoyed lots of his roles over the years as he has been a quietly successful actor since he appeared in a series for young adults/teens in the noughties called Skins. I’d also recommend Godless, a limited Netflix series he stars in (though the real stars of the series are the female cast including Michelle Dockery)

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving,
    Sarah

    1. Thank you for sharing about him. I am just being introduced and take genuinely into consideration what your recommend. I will have to take a look at Godless. ☺️ Thank you for stopping by and wishing you a relaxing holiday Sunday. ?

  5. The Simple Sophisticate is my go-to source for incredible story telling, lifestyle insight and all things delicious and worth pondering. I am a loyal listener and enjoy every podcast, article/books and oodles of information so beautifully provided by the magnificent Shannon. Thank you for sharing the joy of your work.
