There is power in solidarity and that includes the hue of the ensembles we wear. Strongly influenced as of late by Jennifer Aniston’s character’s wardrobe Alex Levy in The Morning Show, simply seeing a tonal wardrobe in action demonstrates the subtle, yet strong sophistication such a sartorial choice makes.

Primarily neutral hues are chosen such as camel, black, grey, ivory, navy, etc. and if made of quality will look spectacular for years whether worn in a tonal ensemble or paired with other items, but brighter hues as well when balanced with more muted tones can be timeless and significant for many seasons to come.

Today I have rounded up more than a handful of tonal outfits from the fall 2019 runways – NYC, Milan, Paris and London. Demonstrating ideas for what type of items to layer and how close or far a hue need be to remain within the proper tone, if you have been building your own capsule wardrobe, you may discover you have more than a few items to pair with each other that could create a stylish, yet timeless outfit, all within the same tone.

Keep in mind the benefit of including different textures and fits. Proportion is important. Make sure not all items are loose or tight, and remembering to keep the accessories in the same tone as well amplifies the outfit even more. From shoes to belts to handbags.

Now the exact items and brands shown in today’s images are far beyond my budget, but the end of the season is nearing and prices will soon be drastically reduced. Currently, Net-a-Porter is having their Friends & Family Sale, offering 25% off without a promo code so long as you have logged in (the price reduction will happen automatically at checkout). So if you do have your eye on a designer item, it won’t hurt to shop for it, save it on Shoptagr and wait to see if the price drops in the next couple of weeks.

This black wool turtleneck from Max Mara and this v-neck camel wool sweater from Joseph are beautiful staples worth taking a look at, especially at 25% off. And if you are looking for warmth from an ivory sweater, take a look at By Malene Birger’s oversized crewneck or Victoria by Victoria Beckham’s oversized turtleneck, again, both 25% off at checkout automatically applied.

Now to peruse the Style Inspiration for the week. 🙂

  1. Love these looks! Will look thru my wardrobe today to see what ensembles I might be able to create. Thanks for this fashion tip. I love your blog! Will be making maple scones later today. Thank you.

  2. I have long worn a tonal wardrobe simply because I am short and it makes me look tall and svelte. It also makes dressing quick and easy, as I stick to just a few colors (black, taupe, red) in my wardrobe that especially flatter me. Rather than being bored with my limited color scheme, I feel joy in knowing that all my pieces are loved and that they make me look and feel fabulous.

  3. Hi Shannon,
Not sure where to post this, sorry it’s off-topic but I noticed that Caudalie doesn’t seem to be making the serum you recommended a few years ago – have you found a good replacement?
    Many thanks!

      1. Oh, I’ve been using the Olio Lusso on your recommendation and LOVE it- like you, we’re in an extremely cold, dry environment – will look into the Regeneration Serum – I love La Mer’s moisturizer. Thanks!!!
