“I have been described as neo-bourgeois . . . as I have a more polished thing going on, a bit sexy but also Sloaney and glamorous. In France, I’m worn by a lot of actresses [such as her friends Julie Delpy and Léa Seydoux, and Isabelle Huppert] and authors [Leïla Slimani, winner of France’s Goncourt prize] who like my clothes because they can relate to them. They can go to an office meeting, feel good and not be ridiculous. I wanted to make clothes that give you confidence. They make you look good but after that it’s your personality that comes across.” —Vanessa Seward
The final week of the Fall 2018 Ready-to-Wear collections has now arrived in Paris, and with the finale set in the City of Light, Vanessa Seward’s collection epitomized Parisian polish. With just enough sophistication and just enough effortless nonchalant confidence, my attention was captured.
Born in Buenos Aires and raised in Paris and London, 48-year-old designer Vanessa Seward name is rising. With three boutiques in Paris and now one in Notting Hill, London, her collections continue to be at the top of my favorite lists when fashion weeks take place each season, and she’s only just begun. Her first collection debuted in fall of 2015, but her talent is seasoned as though she has been in the business for decades. And in many ways she has.
Having worked at Chanel as well as under Tom Ford’s tutelage when he was the creative director of Yves Saint Laurent and then with APC to create capsule collection, her aesthetic is sophisticated, yet effortless. As the Financial Times described in their profile piece of the designer last year, “Her clothes are feminine and wearable, with a retro, intellectual edge” which is precisely why I am drawn to each season’s collection.
Having worn her jumpsuit this past fall for an segment on KATU, her clothing, while not H & M available at prices, are still moderately affordable for superb quality. Offering classic separates and ready-to-wear go-tos that will last for many seasons, I have shopped a few items at the end of the post. But first take a look at my favorite looks from her Fall 2018 collection below and view the entire collection here.
