Each year the first Monday in May brings the Oscars of the fashion world to New York City as a chosen designer is lauded for their gift to the fashion world at large. Charles James and his creations were the center of attention and with that came a strict dress code, especially for men. As The New York Times explains, as the museum’s Costume Institute was renamed in Anna Wintour’s honor, now known as the Anna Wintour Costume Center, she instituted a specific black tailcoat, waistcoat, wing-collared shirt and white bow tie for men in attendance.

And while each man interpreted this rule in their own way, as had to be expected, they all looked dapper. But of course, it was the women who had the eyes of the crowds wearing designs paying homage to James’ signature style. Have a look below at my favorites. Of course, Sarah Jessica Parker (shown above) is always one to way for with great anticipation and this year was no exception. I’m curious to know which was your favorite. Please do share.

  1. Charles James or James Baldwin? I’m not familiar with James Baldwin. Although I must admit, I pay more attention to the dresses than the exhibit. I agree with Rachel. Karolina Kurkova and Gisele were two standouts of the night, although I felt Gisele’s dress was a bit less fashion-y.
